Description

Bad Fruit cuts away the skin of a family as if a daughter could be a knife slicing through lies, pain, and fear. She brought such presence (and by presence, I mean staring a cobra directly in the face kinda presence). Perfect for those who enjoyed Natsuo Kirino’s underrated mishmash of thriller and body horror, Grotesque. I really enjoyed this book and I will definitely be recommending it to friends when it is released in August.

I loved The Darkest Web—but literally the only POC in the entire book was a shrewd Asian woman mooching off her lawyer husband. It centers on Lily, a young biracial Singaporean British girl living in London who is experiencing alarming flashbacks that she can't place. As she works through what this could mean, her already volatile relationship with her mother becomes increasingly tense. Just graduated from high school and waiting to start college at Oxford, Lily lives under the scrutiny of her volatile Singaporean mother, May, and is unable to find kinship with her elusive British father, Charlie.

She lives with her parents in Greenwich, South-East London and has two older siblings: a sister, Julia and a brother, Jacob. The relationship between Lily and her mother was so complex and the author portrayed the fear that Lily has of her mother so perfectly. Gripping and devastating, from a voice that cuts as sharp as a knife, this is an unforgettable story about a family gone bad.Again, I’m not sure I can say that I enjoyed this book but I am in awe of the author’s unflinching spotlight on the darker aspects of Asian society and family dysfunction.
