We reviewed the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Maverick on an LG 55B7 Dolby Vision 4K Ultra HD OLED TV with a Panasonic DP-UB820EB-K Dolby Vision HDR10+ 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

Ultimately little more than an advert for the US Navy, The Final Countdown is still an interesting time capsule of an experiment which makes for a great, if surprising, Native 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos release. Indeed, if you strip away all of that classic, nostalgic fortification fans have cast upon the rightly beloved original over the last few decades, this is comfortably the better film, and even if it may take a little longer achieve that same untouchable classic status as its forebear (its staggering Box Office landmarks have arguably given it a head-start), it'll proudly sit alongside it as an organic continuation that - much like its star - defies the lengthy passage of time to provide a perfect companion-piece to the original. The added dimension in blacks, and shadows as well as the detail rich specular highlights are immediately noticeable.Calibrated with Calman color calibration software and Portrait Displays C6 HDR2000 colorimeter from Portrait. I feel this is a missed opportunity since a movie of this caliber which features multiple aerial sequences, needed a dynamic immersive track. I did enjoy the audio a lot along with the movie of course, and imho this is even better than the original top gun. The interwoven IMAX footage, especially the wide-angle exterior/aerial shots, have superb depth which adds an enriching aesthetic to them. But here, director Joseph Kosinski ( Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) references Tony Scott’s characteristic style while modernizing it, crafting an actioner that takes full advantage of 80s nostalgia while managing to feel contemporary as well. One of the best blockbusters in years, one of the best sequels of all time, and - nostalgia notwithstanding - not only a better follow-up than anybody could have possibly hoped for, but arguably the better film too. I hope the entertainment industry sees the success of this film and "re-learns" that a feel good, action packed, well done and purely entertaining movie can have great success without all of the garbage they tend to put in them now a days, including political agendas. I absolutely love how the drama and melodrama works alongside the action/thrills leveraging the emotion against the adrenaline. Cheesy and over the top, Cruise's Top-Gun-with-cars is still an absolute blast of a guilty pleasure, with some of the best race sequences of all time, looking and sounding better than ever in native 4K with Dolby Vision and Atmos.
