Example: Heavy strap that has an overall length of 1m, a bend at 10cm and a twist at 20cm. (See illustration for detail on measuring bend & twist dimensions). I would have liked the beam spread to be a little wider. It illuminates the road directly ahead, but doesn’t offer much spill on either side for peripheral vision. The light-level modes are easy to use. The run time with full beam is relatively short at only 1 hour 30 minutes. The battery-level indicator is also very simple and the light system made it easy to remind myself to recharge the light.

My commute is 20 minutes each way, so this didn’t bother me much, but if you are likely to be out longer, it’s something to take into consideration.Install HES or H strap to underside of solid noggings. Noggings to be fixed horizontally to avoid twisting of the restraint straps. (1) Finance is subject to application, financial circumstances and borrowing history. The light has five different modes – High (500 lumens), Medium (250 lumens), Low (150 lumens), Flash (500 lumens) and Walk (30 lumens). For seeing, we recommend a light with a high lumen count—200 to 500 is ideal—and a steady beam. Some fancier lights can also switch between a spotlight and a floodlight, allowing you to change your depth of field on the fly if you’re changing speeds. The one issue: A steady beam isn’t always going to catch the attention of others, even if it’s bright, so it’s not best to bring only this light on a road run, especially if you run in the street. The Swift is made with robust rubber and fibreglass to ensure it can handle the rigours of daily use. Where straps are fixed to masonry, hardened nails Ø4mm x 75mm long or wood screws into plastic plugs Ø5.5 x 50mm long should be used. The lowest fixing should be located within 150mm of the bottom of the vertical strap. If you prefer to run in the early morning or late at night, an effective running light is an essential piece of gear. Not only can powerful models illuminate the path ahead to help you avoid tripping hazards, running lights also alert drivers, pedestrians, and other runners to your presence. And proper running lights sit snugly on your body or your gear as you stride. Ideally, you won’t have to fuss with them during your workout. On the other hand, if you want the light to follow your line of sight and illuminate potential tripping hazards, we recommend a headlamp or chest-mounted spotlight that you can more easily reach to adjust on the fly. Waterproofing The NiteRider Swift 500 is certainly up to the job of being a commuter light. I have used it every day for a few weeks in the UK autumn, and it has worked very well.

The first thing to consider is whether you’re looking for a light to help you see, to help others see you, or both. While some two-in-one light combos, such as the Avanto Pro, can do both at one, the average single light will serve only one of the two purposes. If you’re primarily concerned with making sure others can see you, select an option that can clip on or otherwise secure easily to your clothing, as these lights are most likely to stay in place and provide a better picture to other road users of where you’re standing. With the medium or low beam, the light lasts much longer, of course. It’s also great to see it includes a walk (and daylight) mode, which is handy for staying visible when riding in the light.

Fix LES or L strap to wall plate with 3 no. 3.75 x 30mm square twist nails and to masonry with 5 off dia. 5.5 x 50mm wood screws, plugged and screwed into masonry. Fix straps to noggings/trusses with eight 3.75 x 30mm square twist nails, evenly distributed along the length of the strap. (For NHBC warrantied buildings, in accordance with NHBC Standards 2017, section 7.2.8, four 50mm (minimum) x 4mm steel screws or four 75mm x 4mm round wire nails, with one fixing into the third rafter, shall be used instead of the square twist nails). It carries an IP64 ingress protection rating too, the ‘4’ indicating it should handle downpours very well. Recharging is via micro-USB. I found it took around two hours to charge fully, which is pretty good.

Fix straps to bracing with eight 3.75 x 30mm square twist nails, evenly distributed along the length of the strap (For NHBC warrantied buildings, in accordance with NHBC Standards 2017, section 7.2.8, eight 25mm x 4mm steel screws shall be used instead of the square twist nails).

Collectively, we’ve been running for decades and frequently head out before the sun rises or has already set. We recognize the importance of visibility for runners, and have experience with a variety of lights and reflectors. We’ve used this insight—as well as extensive online research—to put together this list of options. Straps to be installed at not more than 2m centres (or 1.25m where appropriate) along pitch of gable end.
