Description

It is a well thought out piece of cloth that may not provide full closure, but leaves the reader satisfied.

If you like long, dry passages where people unnaturally explain the science behind their actions, this book is for you. World War I ("a great little war while it lasted") takes place offstage and is shown through its effects on the characters. Next thing you know is Manhattan is located on a sea of grey goo surrounded by other domes containing alien cities. Some characters are followed from childhood to adulthood, the two most promnient are Jimmy Herf and Ellen. OK, the manure-smelling wooden tunnel was gone by the time I arrived in the early 2000s, but everything else is remarkably familiar. It talks a lot about classism, and brushes over but touches on The Great Depression and first world war. I can see people being a bit put off by the rah rah humanity expressed along the way, and also the rah rah New Yorkers, but so be it.

It is the entrance, for those already in America, into a world that was unique even within the uniqueness of America.

I could have used a little more wind down at the end and a little less of the fanatic preacher but I'm only being nit picky. Phil Sandbourne—An idealistic young architect, Phil plans to revolutionize architecture with his concept for manufacturing inexpensive colored tile. Now we are post credit-crunch this is probably a very good time to read this unusual American novel. Combining alien invasion with apocalyptic survival dependent on engineering skills, with enough characterization to support the story line. While I haven’t read any of Stith’s other works, and this won’t make me rush out and by them, Manhattan Transfer is a likeable enough story and earns three-and-a-half out of five stars. In 1912 he attended Harvard University and, after graduating in 1916, he traveled to Spain to continue his studies. A colourful, multi-faceted chronicle of New York in the early 1920s, Manhattan Transfer ranks with James Joyce's Ulysses as a powerful and often lyrical meditation on the modern city.

The story is a survivalist tale of Manhattanites who are whisked away from earth underneath a plastic dome and to a vast alien space ship, where they find the same has happened to many other cultures from various planets. As an artist, Dos Passos created his own cover art for his books, influenced by modernism in 1920s Paris.

I enjoyed reading each character’s story but I wasn’t attached to any of them (including NYC) and I found that I had to muddle through and fight back some yawns. what’s most captivating about PUSHBACK is that even with people like Dave Barlow—just an average guy doing average things—life can take a shocking turn for the worse.
