Description

Batman: Fortress by Gary Whitta and Darick Robertson essentially poses the question “what would Batman do if the Earth was under attack and Superman was missing? Charged with war crimes committed by the Krytonians prior to the destruction of Krypton, Superman agrees to submit himself for possible execution before an alien tribunal. Believing that the world always needs a Superman, Kal-El complies while transferring his power to Batman who modifies his costume and expands his crimefighting crusade from Gotham City to encompass the whole world. The interplay between Batman and Lex carries the latter half of the series, with Lex’s constant conniving to save his own skin at the expense of those around him. The first issue is Batman dealing with the problems caused by the blackout in Gotham, and the second is the Justice League failing to stop the aliens, all of which could’ve been skipped over or summarised much more quickly.

Batman: Fortress opens with a Dark Knight completely outmatched by a threat from beyond the stars, left with only his wits.In all honestly this should have been a Justice League story but aside from that nit pick it is an ok story. A title like Batman: Fortress and cover art showing Batman in his Batcave suggests that the story will revolve around a locked down Batman solving crimes from deep within his lair.

Near the beginning of the issue, we are treated to an interaction between Gordon and Bullock in which Bullock is portrayed both as an idiot and a coward. By the end of the story, Batman is now the most powerful figure in that universe and is not planning to hole up in his own fortress any time soon but become the ceaselessly proactive force for good he always intended to be. Bei solchen schwerwiegenden Vorkommnissen muss natürlich Superman konsultiert werden, doch blöd nur, dass dieser wie vom Erdboden verschwunden ist.Faced with extraterrestrial invaders determined to eradicate life on Earth as long as Superman defends it, the Man of Steel and Batman come up with a surprising solution: A Kryptonian power transfer.

A decline in quality is to be expected when an artist has to work on a monthly comic but personally, I find that Robertson’s decline on this series is too steep. We get to see Batman work with the Justice League, assemble his own team of much lesser known heroes, put his detective skills to work on a really intriguing case, and ultimately save the world. Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Darick Robertson (The Boys) have joined forces to tell a brutal and shocking adventure that will turn everything you think you know about Superman upside down! But it's also expertly paced with amusing dialogue and a central mystery that's surprisingly crunchy.

Some of the character personalities are a bit off, but it can all be chalked up to the alternate timeline. While mirroring much of the current DCU, the story takes place outside of the main continuity, a fact underscored by its major character deaths and particularly its twist ending. Plus I always appreciate his ability to mostly be framing a grounded, up-close imagery but when it's needed to bounce between that and big action shots and dynamic pages, he can transition quite well.
