It's tough to give a 5 star review to a true crime book and by that I mean that it seems somehow "indecent" since the book is about a terrible murder.

The majority of the memoir, which is written by Tom Cummins’s sister, is about her family’s struggle to survive the crime and its aftermath. The author and her brother, Tom, are confronted by four unruly men while spending time with their cousins Julie and Robin Kerry on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. By all accounts, Julie and Robin were amazing young women, and their deaths left a hole in the lives of all those who loved them: a rip in heaven. Considering this is a memoir about her own family, I believe the author did a fantastic job bringing the true story to life. How might the members of the Cummins and Kerry families be different today if this tragedy had never happened? If I could change the past I would have wanted Robin and Julie to live, so there legacy could live on. Ultimately, though, Cummins’s spandex-tight proximity – and the manner in which she narrates – works against her project’s virtues. When the police asked Tom Cummins to describe his relationship to his cousin Julie, he mentioned “a real strong bond” that they shared (page 100).

With over 6 million of the world’s best eBooks to choose from, Kobo offers you a whole world of reading. Cummins’s choice to disappear from her own story for long stretches becomes a liability as things progress. Along with their entire family, he and his sister, Jeanine, were just at the beginning of a horrific odyssey through the aftermath of a violent crime, a world of shocking betrayal, endless heartbreak, and utter disillusionment. The quote from A Rip in Heaven, "In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer," speaks to the incredible resilience and strength that lies within each individual, even in the darkest of times. This is gripping material, seamlessly capturing both the big picture (police interrogation tactics generally) and small picture (police interrogation tactics, as applied). The way this bombshell is presented, the reader has no choice but to accept that this headline was a fabrication – or at best an exaggeration – a pitiful attempt at smoke-and-mirrors cooked up by two murderers, the murderers’ families, and their gutless, morally bankrupt attorneys. A Rip in Heaven is Jeanine Cummin's story of a night in Apriol 1991, when her two cousins Julie and Robin Kerry and her brother, Tom, were assaulted on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River just outside of St. As primas da autora, assassinadas, são descritas como poetas promissoras, defensoras da paz e do bem, não se lhes conhecendo outras características.

I added this book to my reading list because Jeanine Cummins’ book “American Dirt” was one of the best books I read in 2020.All in all it was a great book, I like how the author switched from one persons point of view to the next. The acclaimed author of American Dirt reveals the devastating effects of a shocking tragedy in this landmark true crime book—the first ever to look intimately at the experiences of both the victims and their families. Louis which turned into a Nightmare Tom who was 19 at the time and his two female cousins were attacked while walking on the abandoned Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. The importance of community support: A Rip in Heaven portrays the unwavering support the Nicarico family received from their community during their darkest times. Being somewhat nosy, and a former defense attorney, and an imbiber of intoxicating beverages, I have talked to him about this particular incident, and this book.
