Description

Sulfur is derived from the Latin word sulpur, which was Hellenized to sulphur in the erroneous belief that the Latin word came from Greek. This spelling was later reinterpreted as representing an /f/ sound and resulted in the spelling sulfur, which appears in Latin toward the end of the Classical period. The true Ancient Greek word for sulfur, θεῖον, theîon (from earlier θέειον, théeion), is the source of the international chemical prefix thio-. The Modern Standard Greek word for sulfur is θείο, theío. Steudel, R. (1982). "Homocyclic sulfur molecules". Inorganic Ring Systems. Topics in Current Chemistry. Vol.102. pp.149–176. doi: 10.1007/3-540-11345-2_10. ISBN 978-3-540-11345-4.

Sulfur forms several polyatomic molecules. The best-known allotrope is octasulfur, cyclo-S 8. The point group of cyclo-S 8 is D 4d and its dipole moment is 0 D. [9] Octasulfur is a soft, bright-yellow solid that is odorless, but impure samples have an odor similar to that of matches. [10] It melts at 115.21°C (239.38°F), boils at 444.6°C (832.3°F) [5] and sublimes more or less between 20°C (68°F) and 50°C (122°F). [11] At 95.2°C (203.4°F), below its melting temperature, cyclo-octasulfur changes from α-octasulfur to the β- polymorph. [12] The structure of the S 8 ring is virtually unchanged by this phase change, which affects the intermolecular interactions. Between its melting and boiling temperatures, octasulfur changes its allotrope again, turning from β-octasulfur to γ-sulfur, again accompanied by a lower density but increased viscosity due to the formation of polymers. [12] At higher temperatures, the viscosity decreases as depolymerization occurs. Molten sulfur assumes a dark red color above 200°C (392°F). The density of sulfur is about 2g/cm 3, depending on the allotrope; all of the stable allotropes are excellent electrical insulators.

Characteristics [ edit ] Physical properties [ edit ] As a solid, sulfur is a characteristic lemon yellow; when burned, sulfur melts into a blood-red liquid and emits a blue flame. The RHS is extremely concerned about the potential unintended effects of pesticides on bees, other pollinators and the wider environment. The RHS welcomes any move that increases our knowledge and understanding of the factors that may play a role in the decline of pollinators and other wildlife.Funny things 'green'houses. Why are they called 'green' houses, when they are clear glass ? ? They're certainly green , with slime and moss at certain times of the year ! I have just cleaned the panes yet again, of said slime, cleared moss out of the recesses for the glass, and all looks pretty good. This was done with vinegar and warmish water, a plastic label for the house frames, and a good stiff scrubbing brush to give a good finish. Monty Don would be proud of me ! So, leaving out a top pane from the end of the hoosie, for cooling purposes and insect in and eg-ress, I look forward to another season of rotting seeds, non- appearance of seeds, curly tomato plants, unexpected visitors in the seed trays, like carrots with toms, cabbages and broccoli, PANSIES (Where the hell did THAT one come from ?) and unidentifiable bean family wayfarers. It's like a boarding house for homeless seedlings here ! Lide, D. R., ed. (2005). "Magnetic susceptibility of the elements and inorganic compounds". It is at this point that caution must be mentioned Sulpur Dioxide must not be mixed with water, as this will produce a weak sulphuric acid (H 2SO 3). Avoid breathing the fumes from a burning sulphur candle as the Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) that is given off will irritate your nose and throat, irritation will also occur on the moist surface of the eye. Northumberland can be unforgiving on a north sloping face, but this only means that we are about a month behind the rest of the country, and possibly three weeks shorter growing season. The soggy ground will soon dry out to entice me in to thinking that I can start sowing a month before it is wise to. Listen to the old fellers and when THEY start digging and sowing !" But now its getting very difficult to source sulphur candles as they are now banned for use on plants as a pesticide although interestingly they still can be used as a greenhouse cleaner which is what I use them for. However companies that make them have decided not to bother with re-registering them due to the extra cost and have ceased manufacture

On the planet Earth the sulfur isotopic composition was determined by the Sun. Though it is assumed that the distribution of different sulfur isotopes should be more or less equal, it has been found that proportions of two most abundant sulfur isotopes 32S and 34S varies in different samples. Assaying of these isotopes ratio (δ 34S) in the samples allows to make suggestions about their chemical history, and with support of other methods, it allows to age-date the samples, estimate temperature of equilibrium between ore and water, determine pH and oxygen fugacity, identify the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the time of formation of the sample, or suggest the main sources of sulfur in ecosystems. [24] However, discussions about what is the real reason of the δ 34S shifts, biological activity or postdeposital alteration, go on. [25] The first use of lime sulphur for the control of peach leaf curl was in California in 1886. It’s made by reacting together sulphur and builder’s lime (calcium hydroxide) – which is different to garden lime (calcium carbonate).
